How does the eXroid electrotherapy treatment work?
The treatment itself is very simple and has been clinically researched for over 150 years, with advances in medical technology now making it a mainstream practice.
A proctoscope is inserted to identify and isolate the base of the haemorrhoids present. The treatment is carried out above the dentate line, meaning no anaesthetic is needed. It is fully ambulatory, requiring no bowel-prep and can therefore be carried out in an out-patient clinic environment, which is one of the main reasons our treatment is considered low risk.
The device generates a small current of up to 16mAmp, which feels only slightly uncomfortable, though not painful, which stimulates a chemical reaction in the haemorrhoid, creating an excess of alkali which accumulates to seal off the feeding varicose blood vessel.
This results in the haemorrhoid being starved of its blood supply and it shrinks accordingly. Sometimes it may take more than one treatment to complete the process where the blood vessels are fully sealed and the haemorrhoid completely disappears.
The effect of the treatment continues to work over the following 4 weeks, at which point our aftercare team will be in touch with the patient to discuss symptom changes and to see if any further treatment might be required.

Follow-up treatments
For around half of our patients, one treatment is all that is needed to be cleared of their haemorrhoids. Larger piles or patients with more than three haemorrhoids may require more than one treatment for this to be achieved. The number of treatments a patient needs is unique to each patient but can be dependent upon how many piles they have and how big they are, although even patients with larger piles have been cleared of their haemorrhoids after just one gentle treatment.
Some common reasons for needing further treatments
For the first time in the study of haemorrhoids, eXroid has been able to help explain why some patients require further treatments, due to our unique patient pathway, meaning we are able to document changes in the haemorrhoids and their symptoms with each treatment. For example, we know that in some patients following a treatment, a new haemorrhoid appears adjacent to the one treated; in others a large haemorrhoid can split into two smaller ones either side of the one treated. These are not predictable events, but ones we have observed in some of our patients. With some large and broad-based haemorrhoids, these will need more than one treatment to shut off all the key blood vessels feeding into their specific haemorrhoid enough to resolve their symptoms, and can usually be predicted at the time of assessment and treatment by the doctor.

The patient pathway
Step 1: REFER
Complete the referral form here. We will contact the patient to book their appointment directly.
Step 2: BOOK THE APPOINTMENT
The patient can book and secure an appointment on-line or over the phone. They will receive all of pre-treatment, appointment and payment confirmation information directly at the point of booking.
Step 3: ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT
The patient will receive a call prior to their appointment to run through COVID-19 screening. At the appointment they will be welcomed by a chaperone and Doctor who will explain and perform the consultation, examination and treatment.
Step 4: TREATMENT NOTES
The patient post treatment care notes and GP letter will be sent directly to the patient following the treatment.
Step 6: AFTERCARE
Included in the care package is access to the patient services team, who are available to help with any questions. We also follow up with every patient at around 4 weeks after their appointment to discuss symptom changes and next steps.
